quite quiet
by Kihako Narisawa
“quite quiet” is a nuanced exploration of Japanese femininity and cultural identity that deals with the interplay between silence and self-expression. Integrating song, physical movement, silence and voice, this performance reflects the personal experiences of the Japanese-born, European-based artists. Drawing inspiration from childhood memories and the energy of Tokyo’s club scene in the 1990s, it invites the audience into a contemplative space that explores the perception and reality of Japanese womanhood. The piece is performed by two dancers—Miyuki Shimizu and Kihako Narisawa—and unfolds as an intimate performance.
After completing several research phases supported by Fonds Darstellende Künste, Goethe-Institut, Fachausschuss BS/BL, Migros Kulturprozent Ideation, and Atelier Mondial, “quite quiet” is now entering the preparation phase for a performance production.
The process so far has involved collaborative choreographic and conceptual development with choreographers, dancers, a movement director, composers, designers, an art researcher, and many other collaborators—exploring themes of cultural identity, perception, and self-presentation.
A work-in-progress performance will be presented at Feldberg 42 during the KONOMI Festival in Basel, 2025.

What Several Waves does:
Several Waves is a non-profit association based in Basel. We initiate, support, and produce cultural and artistic projects that center collaboration, participation, and intersectionality. Our work brings together people across backgrounds, generations, and social positions—especially centering women, BiPOC, and underrepresented communities.
Our approach:
We work transdisciplinarily across performance, sound, spoken text, installation, video, and research. Our artistic processes are rooted in experimentation, dialogue, and mutual exchange—often exploring themes such as cultural identity, self-representation, and perception. Several Waves acts as both a platform and a producing structure, offering conceptual, structural, and production support for projects that challenge conventional formats and foster new forms of collaboration. We operate locally and internationally across theatres, exhibition spaces, and public contexts.
Support us:
Your support enables us to continue developing inclusive cultural projects and sustaining artistic collaboration across disciplines. With your help, we can create opportunities for voices that are often overlooked, and build common ground through creative practice.
